A few years ago, when Brian Schoffstall visited his local cemetery to help place flowers at the graves of deceased family members, he noticed that some of the names and dates were barely visible, having been subjected to lichens, biological material, and father time. After doing some research on gravestone care and products, he decided to give them a deep clean.
He learned where other headstones of his ancestors were located and decided to clean them as well. The surrounding landscape drew his attention and when he looked around, he saw that many headstones were in a less than optimal condition subtly asking for attention.
Later, he cleaned the headstones of others and felt a deep sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.
Brian Schoffstall has worked in the construction industry for over a decade, with years of building, repair, and landscape experience. Oddly enough, and perhaps an unexpected pairing after a fork in the road of life, led him to acquire almost a decade of experience in the long-term care industry where he has extensive experience with end-of-life matters and the importance of preserving memories of loved ones.

Riverside Preservation Services is dedicated to studying the best research and techniques used over the years to restore and repair. There are several types of cleaners and epoxies that can be used for best results. Understanding a thing or two about geology and chemistry come into play here.
At Riverside Preservation Services, we understand that every monument has a unique history. Environmental factors such as molds, lichens, algae, moss, contaminants, exposure to wildlife, and overall weathering play a significant role in the condition of the monument.
Each monument needs and deserves individualized care which is why we hand-clean while using environmentally friendly products. Prior to starting work, an individual assessment will be performed leading to an estimate for the customer. What type of chemicals do you use to clean monuments?

How often should a monument be cleaned?
The frequency of cleaning a monument depends on several factors, including its location, material, and environmental conditions. As a general guideline, it’s recommended to clean a monument every 1-3 years to prevent buildup of dirt, biological growth, and pollutants that can affect its appearance and durability. However, if the monument is in a particularly exposed or humid environment, more frequent cleaning may be necessary. We recommend assessing the condition of the monument regularly and scheduling cleaning as needed to maintain its beauty and longevity.
How long does this process take?
The cleaning solutions utilized take full effect over time. You will see changes in the monument for up to 6-12 months following cleaning. Some monuments will need additional touch up work. Based on research, a significant portion of staining resides beneath the immediate surface of the stone. “Elbow grease”—although tried and true—doesn’t always penetrate the robustness of stones like granite. The cleaning solution works its way into the stone and does its job over time.
What type of tools do you use?
Synthetic brushes are used for cleaning. Wire brushes and high-pressure washers are a no-go, as they can damage the face of the monument. Wire brushes are only used at the mating surfaces of broken stones.
